IVF and Acupuncture: study published in British Medical Journal. 08.02.2008

"Results of a recent systematic review and meta-analysis of 7 trials, involving 1,336 women undergoing IVF suggests that when acupuncture is given in conjunction with embryo transfer, it increases the chance of women becoming pregnant by 65%, in comparison to sham acupuncture or no additional treatment."

Welcome

acupuncture-stockport, daniel j. windridge

My fascination with medicine started in 1998 when I began a course in life sciences and health studies at Stockport College of Further and Higher Education. On successful completion I accepted a place at Manchester University to continue my studies in Human Physiology.

After suffering a painful knee injury a friend suggested acupuncture. During my first appointment the treatment gave immediate pain relief and increased mobility. After further treatments the effects were greater and lasted longer.

As a result of this I became interested in acupuncture and started researching it alongside my studies at Manchester. Finally after completion of year one the fascination led me to transfer to a three-year degree programme in Traditional Chinese Medicine (Acupuncture).

After graduating in the summer of 2003 from Salford University with a BSc (Hons) in Traditional Chinese Medicine (Acupuncture) I became eligible for membership of the British Acupuncture Council (MBAcC). The BAcC is the largest governing body that represents professional acupuncturists.

Obtaining membership of the BAcC guarantees the successful completion of extensive training in traditional acupuncture of three years plus, including the requisite biomedical sciences appropriate to the practice of acupuncture. The BAcC does not accept practitioners who have undertaken short courses, regardless of their other qualifications or prior biomedical training.

Members of the BAcC are bound by strict Codes of Practice, Ethics and Disciplinary Procedures. These codes ensure that each patient is offered the highest standards of professional care during their acupuncture treatment. More information about the BAcC and acupuncture can be viewed by clicking the BAcC member logo at the top of my contact page.

Due to the dynamism acupuncture has to offer I continue to enjoy the practice of this profession and will continue to research and promote its clinical application. My research paper titled Bioelectromagnetism of the Human Body has been published in The European Journal of Oriental Medicine (ejom). This research focused on exploring the mechanics of acupuncture, which can be viewed under the additional information found on my contact page.

My personal mission statement:
"To deliver the highest standard of professional care and treatment within a relaxed, safe and sterile environment."

I also guarantee patient/practitioner confidentiality throughout treatment and future correspondence.

What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a system of medicine originating in China and dating back thousands of years. Due to the health benefits acupuncture is now used all over the world. By recognising the immense potential the body has to adjust, repair and rebalance its self, acupuncture tailors treatment in a specific way independent to that of Western medicine. Treating the root cause and not just the symptoms provide both health care and disease management. The skill of an acupuncturist lies in their ability to make a traditional diagnosis from what is often a complex pattern of disharmony. According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the body's motivating energy - known as Qi - moving in a smooth and balanced way through a series of meridians (channels) beneath the skin. Once this Qi flow becomes impeded ill health will follow. The flow of Qi can be disturbed by a number of factors. These include emotional states such as anxiety, stress, anger, fear or grief, poor nutrition, weather conditions, hereditary factors, infections, poisons and trauma. By inserting ultra fine hair like needles into the channels of energy, an acupuncturist can stimulate the body's own healing response and help restore its natural balance.

Traditional acupuncture treatment is developing an ever increasing interest and credibility in the West due to the growing evidence-base for its` effectiveness in addressing a whole range of medical conditions and non medical concerns. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has listed over forty medical conditions that lend themselves to acupuncture treatment.

Evidence exists for the efficacy of acupuncture in addressing the following conditions:

• Chronic pain    • Postoperative pain    • Pain from arthritis    • Headaches
• Side-effects of chemotherapy    • Digestive disorders    • IVF support and infertility
• Menstrual disorders and pain    • Alleviation of anxiety
• Panic disorders and insomnia    • Skin disorders
• Respiratory conditions
