What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a system of medicine originating in China and dating back thousands of years. Due to the health benefits acupuncture is now used all over the world. By recognising the immense potential the body has to adjust, repair and rebalance itself, acupuncture tailors treatment in a specific way independent to that of Western medicine. Treating the root cause and not just the symptoms provide both health care and disease management.

The skill of an acupuncturist lies in their ability to make a traditional diagnosis from what is often a complex pattern of disharmony. According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the body's function – Referred to as Qi – moving and functioning in a smooth and balanced way through a series of meridians (channels and vessels) beneath the skin. Once this Qi flow becomes impeded ill health will follow.

The flow of Qi can be disturbed by a number of factors. These include emotional states such as anxiety, stress, anger, fear or grief, poor nutrition, weather conditions, hereditary factors, infections, poisons and trauma. By inserting ultra fine hair like needles into the channels and alongside the vessels, an acupuncturist can stimulate the body's own healing response and help restore its natural balance.
